Easter egg

Easter eggs are special eggs that are often given to celebrate Easter or

springtime.

The egg is a symbol of the rebirth of the Earth in celebrations of spring and was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus.

The oldest tradition is to use dyed or painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as jelly beans. These eggs are often hidden, allegedly by the Easter Bunny, for children to find on Easter morning. Otherwise, they are generally put in a basket filled with real or artificial straw to resemble a bird's nest.
he egg is widely used as a symbol of the start of new life, just as new life emerges from an egg when the chick hatches out.

The ancient Zoroastrians painted eggs for Nowrooz, their New Year celebration, which falls on the Spring equinox. The Nawrooz tradition has existed for at least 2,500 years. The sculptures on the walls of Persepolis show people carrying eggs for Nowrooz to the king.

At the Jewish Passover Seder, hard-boiled eggs called Beitzah dipped in salt water symbolizes the Qorban Chagigah or Hashlamim, the festival peace-offerings sacrificed at the Temple in Jerusalem to be eaten on Erev Pesach.

There are good grounds for the association between hares (later termed Easter bunnies) and eggs, through folklore confusion between hares' forms (where they raise their young) and plovers' nests. The mention of eggs left for children in connection with the Germanic goddess Ostara in the supposed Old High German lullaby is considered a literary forgery.
An egg hunt is a game during which decorated eggs, real hard-boiled ones or artificial ones filled with, or made of chocolate candies, of various sizes, are hidden for children to find, both indoors and outdoors.

When the hunt is over, prizes may be given for the largest number of eggs collected, or for the largest or the smallest egg.

Real eggs may further be used in egg tapping contests.

In the North of England, at Eastertime, a traditional game is played where hard boiled pace eggs are distributed and each player hits the other player's egg with their own. This is known as "egg tapping", "egg dumping" or "egg jarping". The winner is the holder of the last intact egg. The losers get to eat their eggs. The annual egg jarping world championship is held every year over Easter in Peterlee Cricket Club. It is also practiced in Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Lebanon, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, and other countries. They call it tucanje. In parts of Austria, Bavaria and German-speaking Switzerland it is called Ostereiertitschen or Eierpecken. In parts of Europe it is also called epper, presumably from the German name Opfer, meaning "offering" and in Greece it is known as tsougrisma. In South Louisiana this practice is called Pocking Eggs and is slightly different. The Cajuns hold that the winner eats the eggs of the losers in each round.

The central European Slavic nations (Czechs and Slovaks etc.) have a tradition of gathering eggs by gaining them from the females in return of whipping them with a pony-tail shaped whip made out of fresh willow branches and splashing them with water, by the Ruthenians called polivanja, which is supposed to give them health and beauty.

Egg rolling is also a traditional Easter egg game played with eggs at Easter. In England, Germany, and other countries children traditionally rolled eggs down hillsides at Easter. This tradition was taken to the New World by European settlers, and continues to this day each Easter on the White House lawn.

Different nations have different versions of the game.

Egg dance is a traditional Easter game in which eggs are laid on the ground or floor and the goal is to dance among them without damaging any eggs which originated in Germany. In the UK the dance is called the hop-egg.

The Pace Egg plays are traditional village plays, with a rebirth theme. The drama takes the form of a combat between the hero and villain, in which the hero is killed and brought to life, The plays take place in England during Easter.

In some Mediterranean countries, especially in Lebanon, chicken eggs are boiled and decorated by dye and/or painting and used as decoration around the house. Then, on Easter Day, young kids would duel with them saying 'Christ is resurrected, Indeed He is', breaking and eating them.

Cascarones, a North-Eastern Mexican tradition now shared by many in South Texas, are an emptied and dried chicken egg stuffed with confetti and sealed with a piece of tissue paper. The eggs are hidden in a similar tradition to the American Easter egg hunt and when found the children (and adults) break them over each others heads.

ANGEL FALLS

Angel Falls or Paradise Falls (Spanish: Salto Ángel; Pemon language: Kerepakupai vena, meaning "waterfall of the deepest place", or Parakupa-vena, meaning "the fall from the highest point") is a waterfall in Venezuela.

It is the world's highest waterfall, with a height of 979 m (3,212 ft) and a plunge of 807 m (2,648 ft). The waterfall drops over the edge of the Auyantepui mountain in the Canaima National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional Canaima), a UNESCO World Heritage site in the Gran Sabana region of Bolívar State, Venezuela.

The height of the fall is so great that, before getting anywhere near the ground, much[clarification needed] of the water is evaporated or carried away as a fine mist by the strong wind. The base of the falls feeds into the Kerep River (alternatively known as the Río Gauya), which flows into the Churun River, a tributary of the Carrao River.

The height figure 979 m (3,212 ft) mostly consists of the main plunge but also includes about 400 m (0.25 mi) of sloped cascades and rapids below the drop and a 30 m (98 ft) high plunge downstream of the talus rapids. While the main plunge is undoubtedly the highest single drop in the world, some feel that including the lower cascades somewhat stretches the criteria for the measurement of waterfalls, although there are no universally recognized standards of waterfall measurement.

Angel Falls is one of Venezuela's top tourist attractions, but, even today, a trip to the falls is a complicated affair. The falls are located in an isolated jungle of Venezuela, and a flight from Puerto Ordaz or Ciudad Bolívar is required to reach Canaima camp, the starting point for river trips to the base of the falls. River trips generally take place from June to December, when the rivers are deep enough for the wooden curiaras used by the Pemon guides. During the dry season (December to March) there is less water seen than in the other months.

Scientist claims that Last Supper was a day earlier

LONDON (AFP) – Christians have long celebrated Jesus Christ's Last Supper on Maundy Thursday but new research released Monday claims to show it took place on the Wednesday before the crucifixion.

Professor Colin Humphreys, a scientist at the University of Cambridge, believes it is all due to a calendar mix-up -- and asserts his findings strengthen the case for finally introducing a fixed date for Easter.

Humphreys uses a combination of biblical, historical and astronomical research to try to pinpoint the precise nature and timing of Jesus's final meal with his disciples before his death.

Researchers have long been puzzled by an apparent inconsistency in the Bible.

While Matthew, Mark and Luke all say the Last Supper coincided with the start of the Jewish festival of Passover, John claims it took place before Passover.

Humphreys has concluded in a new book, "The Mystery Of The Last Supper", that Jesus -- along with Matthew, Mark and Luke -- may have been using a different calendar to John.

"Whatever you think about the Bible, the fact is that Jewish people would never mistake the Passover meal for another meal, so for the Gospels to contradict themselves in this regard is really hard to understand," Humphreys said.

"Many biblical scholars say that, for this reason, you can't trust the Gospels at all. But if we use science and the Gospels hand in hand, we can actually prove that there was no contradiction."

In Humphreys' theory, Jesus went by an old-fashioned Jewish calendar rather than the official lunar calendar which was in widespread use at the time of his death and is still in use today.

This would put the Passover meal -- and the Last Supper -- on the Wednesday, explaining how such a large number of events took place between the meal and the crucifixion.

It would follow that Jesus' arrest, interrogation and separate trials did not all take place in the space of one night but in fact occurred over a longer period.

Humphreys believes a date could therefore be ascribed to Easter in our modern solar calendar, and working on the basis that the crucifixion took place on April 3, Easter Day would be on April 5.

Lady Gaga's 'Judas' Draws Comparisons To 'Bad Romance'

It isn't uncommon for pop stars to pay homage to themselves in the most nostalgic way possible (see Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" music video). And with the release of Lady Gaga's highly anticipated second single, "Judas," from her forthcoming album, we here at MTV News couldn't help but be reminded of another song that sounds more or less similar to the recently dropped track.

From both of the songs' structures to their lyrical repetition, "Judas" draws on heavy elements from Mother Monster's 2009 smash "Bad Romance." Both songs, which were produced by hit-maker RedOne, start off on common ground with comparable lyrical introductions, combining a series of oh's, song-title call-outs and signature Gaga name-drops. As with many of her dance tunes, "Judas" carries a steady, head-bopping beat throughout the verses until comes an even bigger and more sing-along-friendly chorus à la "Bad Romance."

Similarities between the dance tunes don't stop there as Gaga appears to have the same love troubles as she did just a couple of years ago. During both songs, the pop star sings the tale of a woman drawn and captured by the affection of her ill-fated lover. ("Judas" — "Forgive him when his tongue lies through his brain/ Even after three times, he betrays me" vs. "Bad Romance" — "I want your ugly/ I want your disease/ I want your everything/ As long as it's free/ I want your love.")

While Lady Gaga is no stranger to having her songs pitted against hits of past (Yes, I'm looking at you, "Born This Way"), "Judas" is sure to set the dance floor on fire even if it may sound like the long-lost cousin of "Bad Romance."

GLAMOUR

BOHO CHIC

Ortiz Wins Over Berto In An Unanimous Decision

LEDYARD, Conn. (AP)—Victor Ortiz got some advice from Manny Pacquiao before his title fight against unbeaten Andre Berto.

“Manny told me to stick to my game plan,” Ortiz said.

Ortiz listened to boxing’s biggest star and the result was three knockdowns in an upset victory over Berto in a World Boxing Council welterweight title fight Saturday night.

Ortiz (29-2-2) won a unanimous decision despite having a point taken away for hitting behind the head. The three judges scored it 114-112, 114-111 and 115-110.

“That wasn’t me in there tonight,” Berto said, adding that he hurt his right thumb in the second round at the MGM Grand at the Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Berto had made five successful title defenses since he took the WBC welterweight crown in June 2008, when he knocked out Miguel Rodriguez in the seventh round.

Berto (27-1) was nearly knocked out in the first round against Ortiz, who came out firing combinations from the bell, stunning the champion with a right hand followed by a left hook that put him on the canvas.

With Berto clearly dazed, Ortiz tried to finish his rival off. He produced another knockdown, but Berto made it out of the round.

“I noticed he was vulnerable on the inside,” Ortiz said. “Part of my game plan was to smother his shots and overwhelm him.”

Ortiz appeared to be in command in Round 2, when out of nowhere, Berto connected with a short right hand that sent Ortiz backpedaling. He didn’t go down, but took a brief count from referee Michael Ortega.

The brisk pace continued in Round 3 with Ortiz continuing to apply the pressure. The 24-year-old Ortiz continued to stalk Berto in Round 4. Berto kept waving at his opponent to keep coming forward, and Ortiz was happy to oblige.

“I wasn’t surprised the way he tore into me,” Berto said. “I knew he would come out the way he did.”

The 27-year-old Berto turned it around in the sixth round and knocked Ortiz down with a right hand. But just seconds before the round ended, Ortiz flattened Berto with a left hook. Berto got up with no trouble just before the bell sounded.

“That was a beauty of a right hand he hit me with and it was a heck of a round,” Ortiz said. “I’d vote it the round of the year.”

After three uneventful rounds, Berto landed a good right to begin Round 10. Ortiz, who had been warned earlier about hitting in the back of the head, had a point taken away by Ortega. That seemed to motivate him, and he finished the round with a solid combination.

The crowd gave both fighters a standing ovation when the bout ended.

“I would rather have won than just be in an exciting fight,” a dejected Berto said.

Ortiz now has a six-fight winning streak. He hasn’t lost since June 2009, when he was knocked out in the sixth round by Marcus Maidana.

“I think this is where I’m going to stay now at 147 pounds,” Ortiz said. “I’m the king here. “I’m the king of the welterweights.”

Amir Khan Retained His WBA Light Welterweight Title

MANCHESTER, England (AP)—Amir Khan retained his WBA light welterweight title on points after Paul McCloskey was stopped by the referee in the sixth round because of a nasty cut over his left eye on Saturday.

Referee Luiz Pabon deemed the cut to have come from an accidental clash of heads, and summoned ringside doctor Phil Sahu, who believed McCloskey couldn’t continue with blood seeping into his eye and impairing his vision.
McCloskey disagreed but Pabon sent the fight to scorecards, and the Irish challenger and his team were livid.

All three judges had Khan leading 60-54 halfway through the scheduled 12-round bout, and the Englishman improved to 25-1 with 17 knockouts.

McCloskey, the European champion, was furious with the decision that cost him his first loss in 23 fights, and his team believed Khan should have been disqualified.

Khan started patiently against the challenger’s rangy southpaw style. But Khan landed a big right at the start of the second that visibly shook McCloskey, who recovered with a few shots of his own by the end of the round.

McCloskey grew in confidence, and his left crosses in the third pushed Khan back.

Another tactical few rounds followed, with Khan the main aggressor.

In the decisive sixth, a five-punch combination from Khan staggered McCloskey and moments later the pair went toe-to-toe before McCloskey wheeled away and noticed blood coming from around his left eye.

The referee immediately brought the fight to an abrupt end to a chorus of boos from the 6,000-strong crowd of McCloskey fans.

Salido Upsetting Lopez With An Eight Round Stoppage

So much for the big showdown between Juan Manuel Lopez and Yuriorkis Gamboa.

THE RING’s Nos. 1- and 2-rated featherweights had been on a collision course for the past two years. Hardcore fans everywhere couldn’t wait to see what happened when Lopez, a popular Puerto Rican puncher with solid technique and heart, clashed with the Cuban amateur standout with dynamic speed and power.

However, Orlando Salido put all discussion of that anticipated match on hold by upsetting Lopez with an entertaining eighth-round stoppage Saturday in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, Lopez's hometown.

Salido, a hardnosed veteran and former beltholder from Mexico, dropped Lopez in the fifth round and repeatedly stunned the 10-to-1 favorite before referee Roberto Ramirez Jr. waved the fight off at 1:39 of the eighth round.

The stoppage was shocking given the status of the two fighters. Salido entered the bout with 11 losses, one of which was his last bout, a unanimous-decision loss to Gamboa last September. Lopez was undefeated in 30 bouts, 27 of which he won by knockout. The two-division titleholder was ranked No. 9 in the pound-for-pound rankings of both THE RING and Yahoo! Sports.

One can forgive Lopez’s promoter, Top Rank, for viewing Salido as a reasonably “safe” bout for the budding Puerto Rican star. One can almost forgive Top Rank President Bob Arum for telling fans and boxing media who wanted to see a Lopez-Gamboa match sooner rather than later to “go f___ themselves” a year ago.

Arum wanted to let the featherweight showdown marinate until it became a “super fight,” and it’s hard to fault him for that logic. The longer the hall-of-fame promoter held the featherweight beltholders apart, the more fans debated and demanded the fight, and the more money he and the combatants would make once the bout was made.

However, this is boxing, and as fans have witnessed in recent days, any damn thing can happen in that ring.

Salido (35-11-2, 23 knockouts) is not in Lopez’s class in terms of talent and technique, but sometimes a rock-solid chin can neutralize superior power. Sometimes an aggressive brawler with an awkward style can throw off a boxer-puncher with textbook form.

Sometimes personal troubles, such as Lopez’s recent divorce, can distract even the most-seasoned professional. And sometimes the underdog catches a break from the officials.

Salido’s TKO was not without controversy. Lopez, who was clearly hurt along the ropes but on his feet and throwing back when Ramirez waved the fight off, was infuriated by the stoppage, as were many fans.

“He was hitting me but they shouldn’t have stopped the fight,” Lopez said during his post-fight interview with Jim Gray of Showtime, which televised the fight in the U.S. “I was still conscious.”

Lopez controlled the first three rounds with his jab and lateral movement, and he was game until the bitter end, but the usually sharp southpaw was nailed by looping overhand rights from Salido throughout the fight.

Salido landed a number of right hands in the fourth round, sparking the warrior within Lopez, who stood his ground and traded with the grizzled 30-year-old veteran in that round and the fifth. Big mistake. Salido connected with a huge right that dropped Lopez hard with 16 seconds left in the fifth round. Lopez got up on very wobbly legs and barely survived the round.

Although he remained game in the following rounds, even rocking Salido toward the end of the sixth and seventh, he continually absorbed the harder punches during their many exchanges.

“The punch did hurt me in the fifth round, but I recouped,” Lopez said. “(Salido) is a very uncomfortable fighter. I realistically couldn’t block that punch (the right hand).”

That fact was evident in the eighth round as Salido backed Lopez into a corner with a series of flush rights and then teed off on the wobbly but defiant Puerto Rican favorite until the referee had seen enough.

The fight was even, 66-66, on all three official scorecards at the time of the stoppage.

“It was a great fight,” Lopez said. “I just want him to give me a rematch.”

That’s a fight that must happen, and one the dethroned titleholder must win, if fans ever hope to see Lopez-Gamboa.

Borich Leads Points Chase Heading into Round Four of GNCC

Morgantown, W. Va. (April 5, 2011) - After winning eleven of thirteen races in 2010, Chris Borich secured the Championship and rolled into the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series with more momentum then ever. Borich kept it going as he had a nine-race winning streak heading into the last round at the FMF Steele Creek GNCC. Unfortunately, after passing for the lead on the last lap, Borich experienced some mechanical issues that left his bike to sputter past the finish line in fifth place.

Foremost Insurance Warnert Racing Can-Am rider Adam McGill secured his first win of the season after battling with teammate Chris Bithell throughout the two-hour race. Bithell led a majority of the race until he lost his rear brakes on the last lap, giving McGill the opportunity to hammer out the win.

Round four of the 2011 Can-Am GNCC tour, the Pirelli Big Buck GNCC in Union, South Carolina, takes place this weekend April 9-10. Now that the Can-Am duo has broken up the winning streak of Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Chris Borich, the playing field has evened back out to a championship chase that could be anyone's claim.Another contender in the quest for the GNCC title is Ballance Racing Yamaha's Taylor Kiser, who currently sits fourth in the point standings. Kiser was docked a position at Steele Creek after choosing a bad line on the course but there's definitely possibility for Kiser to step up and get a moto win amongst the stacked field of XC1 riders.

Ballance Racing's Walker Fowler has dominated the XC2 division so far, claiming his third win of the season. DeRisi Racing's Eric Hoyland and KTM rider Aarol Bright have been mixing it up in the top three with Greg's ATV & Cycle Yamaha rider Gabe Phillips and Honda rider Parker Jones edging out the top five in points.

Spectator passes run $15 for the full weekend, with pro pit access and pro autographs at no additional charge. On both Saturday and Sunday, youth riders race at 8 a.m., beginner riders race at 10 a.m., and the top amateurs and the pros race at 1 p.m.

To get to the track, take I-26 to Exit 44, then to Highway 49 North 7 Miles and look for the signs.

$10,000 Reward Raised For The Giants’ Beaten Fan

Bryan Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic from Santa Cruz who is also a father of two children was badly beaten by two suspects who were reportedly wearing Dodgers clothing after the Giants-Dodgers season opener Thursday. The poor fellow suffered a medically induced coma for brain injuries at County-USC Hospital. Fortunately he is stable right now.

Security cameras were not able to get a decent picture of the two suspects and only relied on the sketches. Detective Larry Burcher is pretty confident that a lot of people were able to witness on the incident. “We’re very confident there were witnesses. It happened immediately following the game when everybody was coming out,” Burcher said.

A reward amounting to $10,000 has been raised by Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich for any information of the incident that could help them give justice to the Giants’ fan. An enhanced security and strict limits on stadium alcohol sales has also been commanded after the monetary award has been announced.

It is just so sad that incidents like this one happens in a supposedly fun game. Fans can get wild in defending their team but it is not just rightful that it would lead to hurting an opponent’s fan.

NASCAR 2011 Martinsville Updates:

Opening in 1947, the Martinsville Speedway is the oldest track in NASCAR. At .526 miles in length, the paperclip-shaped oval is also the smallest track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. In spite of its age and size, however, the Martinsville Speedway annually provides some of the best action of the entire Sprint Cup season.

Martinsville Speedway is one of those tracks that sometimes a novice fan or a new fan looks at it and thinks it really couldn’t be that difficult to race on. Martinsville is deceiving. It is flat and small. Sure, the cars aren’t going 200 mph, but it is just as tough, if not tougher than any of those big tracks. To get around Martinsville takes so much finesse. It also takes a lot of patience.

The recipe for the excitement produced on the claustrophobic speedway is simple: take 43 cars manned by 43 human beings fully capable of the perfectly human emotion of losing their cool, pack them into a space that small, then rinse and repeat 499 times, and the result is plenty of bent sheetmetal, plenty of bruised egos, and often times, plenty of blowups.

Carl Edwards will easily tell you that Martinsville drives him crazy. The place is just that difficult. This may be hard to believe, but in all of his 84 wins, NASCAR legend Bobby Allison was never able to win there.

The place is also one of NASCAR’s most historic tracks. It has so much history. The track opened in 1947. So it has been around longer than NASCAR itself. We’ve lost some tracks over the years like Rockingham (North Carolina Motor Speedway) and North Wilkesboro, but Martinsville Speedway continues to thrive. Twice a year, NASCAR’s focus is on Martinsville.

Massacre at Koran-Burning Protest At UN Office At Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Demonstrators incensed at the burning of a Koran by a Florida pastor opened fire on a United Nations office Friday in northern Afghanistan, killing 12 people, including three foreign UN workers and five Nepalese UN guards, officials said.

Two of the foreign dead reportedly were beheaded, Reuters reported.

The other four dead were protesters, the Associated Press reported.

"We can confirm an attack on the UN mission in Afghanistan's operations center in Mazar-i-Sharif, and can confirm that there have been deaths of UN personnel," deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said at UN headquarters in New York. "The situation is still confusing and we are working to ascertain all the facts and take care of all our staff."

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's special representative in Afghanistan, Staffan De Mistura, was "on his way to Mazar-i-Sharif now to deal with the situation personally on the ground," AFP reported.

The rampage began when demonstrators marched in Mazar-i-Sharif and in the capital Kabul on Friday to protest the burning last month of Islam's holy book by Florida pastors Terry Jones and Wayne Sapp. Jones reportedly put the Koran "trial," then supervised Sapp as he burned the book.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the burning, and called on the U.S. to bring those responsible to justice.

Jones captured headlines last September when he threatened to burn the Koran on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. Jones canceled the burning after appeals from several world leaders, including President Obama.

Jones, meanwhile, issued a statement Friday, calling on President Obama to "take a close, realistic look at the radical element Islam... It is time that we call these people to accountability."

Last month's Koran burning also was blamed for an attack earlier this week on a Catholic church in Pakistan. Government officials said the attack was directly related to the Koran burning, but Msgr. Anthony Rufin, bishop of Islamabad, would not link the two incidents.

Lindsay Lohan Walks Her First Red Carpet After Rehabbed

Lindsay Lohan hit the Manhattan premiere of Jake Gyllenhaal's The Source Code Thursday night.

Still facing a legal battle for allegedly stealing a $2500 necklace from a Venice, California jewelry store, "Lindsay seems much more at ease now that she's decided to go to trial and not take a plea deal," a source tells UsMagazine.com. "She feels that the jury will see she's innocent."

Yet, after she fell while leaving a local bar Wednesday night, blogs were buzzing about whether the recently rehabbed Lohan was back to her old ways. "Is it not allowed to slip and fall?" Lohan fired back via Twitter Thursday. "I'm always a klutz!!!"
